COT: One of our fellow PAX is hurting right now having just lost his brother, David. Prayers go out to Paul and his family as they grieve this loss. The following is an excerpt from “The Bridge of San Luis Rey,” by Thornton Wilder.
The novel concerns a search for the meaning behind why five people perished when an ancient bridge collapsed. It’s about how we find meaning in tragedy. The novel’s finale concludes:
“But soon we will die, and all memories of those five will have left Earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a while and forgotten. But the love will have been enough; all those impulses of love return to the love that made them. Even memory is not necessary for love. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead, and the bridge is love. The only survival, the only meaning.”
David’s love was more than enough. Like a bridge, he remains tied to them. May they see him in their dreams.
