THE THANG:
In recognition of Wimbledon (tennis) wrapping up this weekend we played a game with tennis balls, but no rackets. Divided up into four teams of three. Each team served (threw) the ball across the width of artificial grass field to a teammate. If caught on the fly OR successfully rolled through a goal set up, the team could start or continue the progression of exercises. However, dropped balls or missed goals led to a penalty lap around the field while teammates did a penalty exercise. No drop/miss then you could start the progression or continue the progression of exercises. Tennis is scored in 15 point increments, so the progression of exercises was also by 15 rep increments.
The progression of exercises:
1st exercise: 15 World War II sit-ups
2nd exercise: 30 toe-touch merkins (alternating feet).
3rd exercise: 45 mountain climbers
4th exercise: 60 side straddle hops
5th exercise: 45 mountain climbers
6th exercise: 30 toe-touch merkins
7th exercise: 15 World War II sit-ups
Final exercise: bear crawl across field and crab walk back.
The seven stages of exercise required seven successful throws or rolls. Some teams threw and some chose to roll! All four teams dropped balls or missed goals and had to do penalty laps/exercises. Penalty exercises were High knees in place, Bobby Hurley’s and elbow planks.
The teams that finished the game earliest worked on balance and stability by standing on one straight leg and leaning torsos forward until parallel to the ground and holding for three seconds, switching back and forth between legs. Also some fire hydrants.
After all teams completed the game, we did 30 rail dips and a final a victory lap around the playing field.

COT: Sticking with the Wimbledon tennis theme, shared a story about a lesser known, Swiss professional tennis player named Stan Wawrinka. Stan has played in the shadow of the great Roger Federer for most of his pro tennis career. But Stan still eked out three grand slams tennis titles and an Olympic gold medal. Before winning those titles and to give himself a little spark, Stan got a tattoo on his forearm that says: “Ever tried, ever failed, no matter, try again, fail again, fail better”. A simple reminder that life is full of failures, daily and weekly if you are a pro tennis player, but also if you are a working professional or parent or athlete of another sort. But, if you are willing to endure those failures, you will likely find your way to the top, whatever that top might be….like Stan did.
