“Four score and seven years ago…” the famous words President Lincoln uttered to begin The Gettysburg Address, referencing the 87 years that had passed since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The 87 steps leading up to the entrance of the Lincoln Memorial pay hommage to this address, and its message to “…resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
As we ascend these stairs 23 times we pay hommage and resolve that the men and women, especially the first responders, that lost their lives on September 11, 2001, shall not have died in vain.
