THE THANG:
In recognition of Wimbledon (tennis) wrapping up this weekend we played a game with tennis balls, but no rackets. Divided up into four teams of three. Each team served (threw) the ball across the width of artificial grass field to a teammate. If caught on the fly OR successfully rolled through a goal set up, the team could start or continue the progression of exercises. However, dropped balls or missed goals led to a penalty lap around the field while teammates did a penalty exercise. No drop/miss then you could start the progression or continue the progression of exercises. Tennis is scored in 15 point increments, so the progression of exercises was also by 15 rep increments.

The progression of exercises:
1st exercise: 15 World War II sit-ups
2nd exercise: 30 toe-touch merkins (alternating feet).
3rd exercise: 45 mountain climbers
4th exercise: 60 side straddle hops
5th exercise: 45 mountain climbers
6th exercise: 30 toe-touch merkins
7th exercise: 15 World War II sit-ups
Final exercise: bear crawl across field and crab walk back.

The seven stages of exercise required seven successful throws or rolls. Some teams threw and some chose to roll! All four teams dropped balls or missed goals and had to do penalty laps/exercises. Penalty exercises were High knees in place, Bobby Hurley’s and elbow planks.

The teams that finished the game earliest worked on balance and stability by standing on one straight leg and leaning torsos forward until parallel to the ground and holding for three seconds, switching back and forth between legs. Also some fire hydrants.

After all teams completed the game, we did 30 rail dips and a final a victory lap around the playing field.

COT: Sticking with the Wimbledon tennis theme, shared a story about a lesser known, Swiss professional tennis player named Stan Wawrinka. Stan has played in the shadow of the great Roger Federer for most of his pro tennis career. But Stan still eked out three grand slams tennis titles and an Olympic gold medal. Before winning those titles and to give himself a little spark, Stan got a tattoo on his forearm that says: “Ever tried, ever failed, no matter, try again, fail again, fail better”. A simple reminder that life is full of failures, daily and weekly if you are a pro tennis player, but also if you are a working professional or parent or athlete of another sort. But, if you are willing to endure those failures, you will likely find your way to the top, whatever that top might be….like Stan did.

COT: I came across the maxim: “Reality is undefeated,” and thought it was a very profound statement. It means that no belief, ideology, hope, or denial has ever altered the course of what actually happens. You can ignore gravity, but you will still fall. You can reject evidence, but the consequences will still unfold. Every failed theory, collapsed system, or broken plan is not a failure of reality—it’s a failure to model it accurately. Reality doesn’t yield to consensus or emotion; it doesn’t care about fairness, intention, or ambition. It simply persists, absolute and unbroken. In every contest between what is imagined and what actually is, reality wins—not because it fights, but because it is. To live effectively is not to resist reality but to recognize its terms and operate within them. You can deny it, argue with it, or try to outsmart it—but in the end, reality remains undefeated.

To pursue a vision when its feasibility is uncertain, the key is to try to treat reality as an adversary worth respecting but not fearing. The process requires iteration between vision and verification, with the understanding that reality is undefeated but not uncooperative. Here’s how to make it happen:

– Anchor the Vision, Loosen the Path
• Keep your vision fixed—what you’re aiming for—but stay flexible about how to get there. • Treat failure not as a verdict, but as feedback from reality’s filter.

– Probe Reality, Don’t Presume It
• Break the vision into falsifiable hypotheses and test them.
• Look for hard constraints (what is physically or economically impossible) vs. soft constraints (what is currently unproven, expensive, or unpopular).

– Accept that Ambiguity Is Normal
• If your vision is truly novel, uncertainty is the default state.
• The absence of proof is not proof of impossibility—but it is a demand for experimentation.

– Adopt Evolutionary Progress
• Try many versions, kill weak ones, and scale what survives.
• Treat the world like a fitness landscape: local failures help you find higher ground.

– Use Reality as a Collaborator, Not an Enemy
• Each constraint reveals the shape of the world. Use that shape to refine your tools. • Don’t fight reality—exploit it. Find leverage points others overlook.

– Refuse Delusion, Retain Drive
• Don’t confuse perseverance with denial.
• Stay committed, but adjust your model of the world as feedback accumulates.

– Remember: Vision is hypothesis, not law
• Just because you want something doesn’t mean it’s possible.
• But everything that exists now once lived in the zone of “not clearly possible.”
